You probably wouldn’t expect to find some tasty pizza in the lobby area between two big office buildings, but that’s exactly where I found it this week. Then again, Sababa Cafe isn’t really a pizza place; they just happen to serve it. The menu is mostly of the salad and sandwich variety that you would probably expect from a restaurant tucked between two fairly busy office buildings; they even serve breakfast and coffee shop standard drinks. Seeing how diverse the menu was, I was curious how good the pizza could be. Read more »

I’ve been curious about Riverfront Pizzeria for quite some time now. They opened in 2006 and I used to deliver coffee to them when I worked for Alterra Coffee Roasters. I actually tried going there one time but discovered that they’re closed on Mondays. At the time I was seriously bummed but you can’t hate on an establishment for taking a day off. Especially, a Monday. I had a surprisingly drunken Wednesday night so I decided to take a nap as soon as I got home from work on Thursday. I was in my bed for a little while relishing in it’s comfort when there was that familiar knock on my bedroom door. It was Strip Club Dave, my room mate and long time friend (and one time band mate while we’re at it). He was leaving for Thailand on Saturday for a month and wanted to get some pizza since he wouldn’t be eating it for longer than anyone should go without a slice. He immediately offered Riverfront as an option. I was more than happy to oblige.

After T. Mario and I failed to find that pizza truck, we ended up checking out the highly recommended Transfer.
Upon entering this oddly-shaped corner building at the intersection of Kinnickinnic and Mitchell, it’s pretty obvious that it’s not a normal pizza joint. For one thing, they appear to have a full coffee shop on the right hand side. The counter wraps around to the other side, which is a full bar with a fairly decent beer and liquor selection.

Yesterday T. Mario and I attended the first annual “Iron Pizza Competition” hosted by Moct. The details were a little hard to come by, but seeing that pizza-related events don’t come around very often, we had to check it out. Even if it was at Moct (pronounced “MOST”), a place that seemingly has nothing to offer me now that no one I know works there.
Apparently there was to be some sort of competition between nine local pizza makers: Tenuta’s, Marchese’s Olive Pit, Classic Slice, Marco’s, Steny’s, Times Square, Vinchi’s, Mama DeMarini’s, and Moct (which apparently serves food now).

Now, if your lifestyle involves getting completely shit-tanked at the Roman Coin on a weekly basis, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to be looking for some pizza around 2:00 AM. And the most likely place you’re going to stumble across is Zayna’s Pizza.

I don’t usually go to places likes Rock Bottom. This massive riverfront palace of a bar seems too hip and swanky to be a hangout for a sparsely-employed freelance writer who periodically wears shirts with wolves on them. But after taking in a comedy show at the Pabst Theatre with some visiting relatives last weekend, we stumbled across the bridge to give Rock Bottom — a place I’m neither wealthy nor un-lovehandled enough to visit alone — a try.

Beautiful as it is, there’s not much happening in Shorewood, WI. Sure, I reside a mere five-minute stroll from a gorgeous Lake Michigan beach; my neighborhood is both nicer and more safe than any other place I’ve lived; and I have coveted driveway parking just a Peter North cumshot from Oakland Ave. But (discounting the fire-bombed remains of Britain’s) there are just two bars in my neighborhood, and I’ve slowly come to realize that I — a high functioning 24-year-old alcoholic and nighthawk — have accidentally settled in the yoga and optometry district of Greater Milwaukee.
So when I happened upon Gianelli’s, a dine-in pizza joint and one of three local businesses miraculously open past 6:30 p.m., I was excited to give it a try.
There aren’t many things I look forward to anymore.
Beyond baseball’s opening day, open bars at weddings, and things I’ve put off until my thirties like marriage and kids (rhythm method forbid), nothing I do really evokes that sense of passion, longing and anticipation I routinely felt when I was younger. Maybe I’ve learned not to expect much from the world, or maybe I’m just a realist.
I’m not sure exactly why, but I looked forward to eating at Classic Slice.

In my fairly minimal stint living in Milwaukee, I’ve been to Brick 3 Pizza more than any other pizza place in the area (twice). I hope that changes.
Originally led there by a towering banner reading “PIZZA” as the North Star lead the shepherds to Jesus’ manger like 50 years ago… or whatever, I (along with this site’s own “Ronnie” and another gent) decided to give this 3rd Street eatery a go a few weeks back. More recently, I was treated for lunch there by SportsBubbler’s own Dan Walsh. So between the two trips, I can safely say I’ve given Brick 3 a fair look.
Nestled within crawling distance of popular locations like Turner Hall and The Bradley Center, and close enough to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel office to literally smell the shit that is Anthony Witrado’s latest Brewers article, Brick 3 has a prime location — at least until the JS goes tits up and the Bucks move. And their food isn’t exactly shabby either.
