Then again, Sababa Cafe isn’t really a pizza place; they just happen to serve it. The menu is mostly of the salad and sandwich variety that you would probably expect from a restaurant tucked between two fairly busy office buildings; they even serve breakfast and coffee shop standard drinks. Seeing how diverse the menu was, I was curious how good the pizza could be.

Not where you'd expect to go for pizza

If I didn’t cut through the Plaza East offices on my walk home from work, I’d probably never even know Sababa (which apparently is Arabic for “awesome”) existed. They don’t have very good representation outside of the building, so it’s fairly clear that they’re catering almost exclusively to employees within the twin towers. The atmosphere is pretty much what you’d expect from a place that mostly serves lunch and breakfast to an office community; in no way does it scream (or even whisper) ‘get some pizza here.’ Since I work nearby, I occasionally stop in for a sandwich or coffee and noticed the pizza on the menu. It was only a matter of time before that za was in my belly.

The pizzas are small, personal-sized pies that are just enough for lunch. They offer three specialties (Chicken Caesar, Mediterranean, Margherita) and three standards (Cheese, Sausage, Pepperoni), all between 4 and 5 bucks. I ordered up a cheese and after a 5 minute wait I had that mini-za in my hands.

THE GOOD: The cheese seemed really fresh and had a great consistency. When I grabbed my first tiny slice the cheese stretched like a mile before the slice finally broke free. The serving size was just enough to satisfy my mid-day hunger, so it made for a good lunch option.

THE BAD: It seems that a lot of by-the-slice places give you way more pizza for less than $4, but I don’t think it was really that big of a deal. And maybe I missed something, but I think the food here is good enough to warrant a more noticeable sign outside of the building. Most people aren’t just going to stumble into the lobby of an office center.

TRY: Everything I’ve had here has been pretty good. They’ve got a plethora of sandwiches, wraps and salads that can fulfill anyone’s lunchtime desires. Next time I get their pizza, I’ll probably pay that extra dollar and get the Margherita.

I’ll definitely be going back to Sababa, but that’s mostly because I often work a block away and like to drink coffee and eat lunch. The pizza isn’t what will be bringing me back, but it’s definitely nice to have the option.

RATING: SABABA!
